Salted Ice Cream |
Note: When video gamers hear about the combination of salt and ice cream, many instantly think of Kingdom Hearts (beginning with KH2) in which sea salt ice cream popsicles make an appearance. You can totally make those popsicles using this recipe, simply omit the chocolate morsels and waffle cones and stir in a little milk. Spoon the mixture into wedge shaped popsicle molds with wooden popsicle sticks and freeze. Remove by carefully running warm water over the molds.
Familiars' Salted Ice Cream
Ingredients:
1 can (14 oz.) Sweetened Condensed Milk
1/2 tsp. Fine Sea Salt
1 pint (2 Cups) Heavy Whipping Cream
1 bag Semi-sweet Chocolate Morsels
Royal Blue Icing Color Gel
Teal Icing Color Gel
1 pkg. Waffle Cones
Directions:
1. Place a medium mixing bowl in the freezer along with the pint of heavy whipping cream. Chill for several minutes. In the meantime, empty the can of sweetened condensed milk into a large bowl & stir in the salt until well combined.
2. Remove the chilled bowl & heavy cream from the freezer & pour the cream into the bowl. Beat at high speed until the cream forms stiff-ish peaks (about 7 minutes) BUT not so much that it turns into butter! (Basically, you're making whipped cream in this step.) Scoop all of the whipping cream into the bowl with the condensed milk & fold together until no streaks remain.
3. On a cutting board, chop about 1/2 cup of chocolate morsels into chunks. Fold the chunks in the cream mixture along with tiny amounts of the gel colorings until you get the appropriate color--a light tealy-blue mixture (see game image top right for reference).
4. Once everything is combined well (no streaks), pour the mixture into a bread loaf pan, cover with plastic wrap, & chill in the freezer over night. Serve in waffle cones.
Optional chocolate coated waffle cones:
In a small bowl melt about 1/2 cup chocolate morsels in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Once completely melted stir in a small spoonful of shortening. Spoon chocolate into the waffle cones one at a time, tilting them & swirling them around to coat the entire inside of the cone & letting the excess drip back into the bowl. This inner chocolate coating will prevent any ice cream drippage from the bottom of the cone & is simply a yummy addition!
