"Sploosh" Peach & Onion Salsa | Holes

I recently had a little get together with several awesome kids to watch the 2003 Disney movie "Holes", based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Louis Sachar, which we read before hand. I provided a few themed treats like sunflower seeds (pre-shelled), pizza and soda (as wished for by one of the characters in the book), Kissin' Kate lip cookies (stay tuned for the recipe), and, of course, some sort of peach and onion concoction. I decided on salsa, and while it's definitely a unique taste, it's actually pretty good (I'm munchin' on some as I type)!

"Onions! Sweet, fresh onions!" Sam would call, as he and his donkey, Mary Lou, walked up and down the dirt roads of Green Lake.

Every summer Miss Katherine would pick bushels of peaches and preserve them in jars with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and other spices which she kept secret.

I like to think the secret ingredients included sweet onions :). And then, over a hundred years later...

Zero held a jar in his hand and grunted as he tried to unscrew the lid.

"What is it?"

"Sploosh!" His voice was strained as he worked on the jar. "That's what I call it. They were buried under the boat."
. . . .

It was warm, bubbly, mushy nectar, sweet and tangy. It felt like heaven as it flowed over his dry mouth and down his parched throat.  He thought it might have been some kind of fruit at some time, perhaps peaches.

"Sploosh" Salsa

Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cups Finely Diced Peeled Peaches
1/3 Cup Finely Diced Sweet Onion
1 tsp. Lemon Juice
1/4 tsp. Salt
Dash Nutmeg
Pinch Cinnamon
Pinch Cloves
Pinch Ground Black Pepper

Directions:
1. Stir all of the ingredients together, adding more salt & spices to taste if desired. Cover & let sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes, & then smoosh it a bit with the back of your spoon. Serve with tortilla chips–the scoops kind are great. You could also serve this on grilled chicken or fish!

  3. Our book club is reading Holes in November. I might need to make some sploosh! Thanks so much for your blog, by the way. Our family discovered it during an Avatar Korra kick and have been enjoying your recipes, art, and words ever since. We have had great success with Spirit Cake, Lychee Juice and Kalenutscos.

  4. This might actually be the reason I like peach salsa. Sploosh. Loved Holes in 5th grade. Loved the movie too. Discovered peach salsa a couple of years later. It makes sense.
