"Are those gingernuts? I love gingernuts!"
– Sherlock, S4, EP1, "The Six Thatchers", BBC "Sherlock"
Note: Gingernuts are ginger cookies, or biscuits, like gingersnaps in the US (no nuts involved. Just "nut" referring to the little balls of cookie dough). I made mine very basic, based on a recipe from Delia Online, but feel free to "spice" things up by adding in a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or allspice, or a couple tablespoons of minced crystalized ginger or minced candied orange peel, or rolling the cookie dough balls in demerara sugar. Haha, I did end up giving the cookies a little personality by decorating them with the iconic BBC Sherlock yellow smiley face using candy melts.😉 (pic after the recipe)

Sherlock's Gingernuts
Ingredients:
3/4 Cup Flour
1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp. Ground Ginger
1 tsp. Baking Soda
Pinch Salt
1/4 Cup Butter, room temperature, sliced
2 Tbsp. Golden Syrup*
*(if you can't find golden syrup, molasses if fine, but it gives a slightly different taste)
Directions:
1. Heat your oven to 375ºF & line a large baking tray with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl whisk together all of the dry ingredients (if adding in extra spices, lessen the ginger & add the spices in at this point). Add the butter pieces & rub them into the dry mixture by rubbing your hands back & forth. The mixture will become powdery & completely combined (if adding minced crystalized ginger or orange peel, work it in now). Add the golden syrup (or molasses) & mix on medium until a nice dough forms.
2. Scrape the dough together with your fingers & form it into a uniform ball. Cut the ball in half, & then lay the halves cut-side down. Cut each half into quarters, & then again into eights (so, you'll end up with 16 cookies). Roll each wedge into a ball & flatten it slightly in the center of your palm. Lay the discs on the cookie sheet at least 2 inches apart. Using the bottom of a measuring cup gently press each dough disc just a bit flatter, between 1/2 - 1/4 in.
3. Slide the tray into the oven & bake for about 10-12 minutes. Remove & let cool for a few minutes, & then transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely. Serve as is, or decorate with yellow candy melt smiles!🙂
When Sherlock's grabby-hand gingernut scene happened at the very beginning of season 4, episode 1 I tweeted his quote (haha, I often live tweet food quotes when I watch TV) and added that I felt compelled to try my hand at making these cookies. Heather over at All Roads Lead to the Kitchen and Trine at Nerdy Treats both replied that they'd had the exact same thought! We decided to have a gingernut party, so click their links to go to their recipes!
